Victim blaming should be canceled. So we did it.

Exposing victim blaming

Terrazza Sentimento is a Netflix documentary on the dramatic case of Alberto Genovese, a Milan entrepreneur who assaulted young women during his exclusive penthouse parties. Beyond exposing the brutality of the crime, the series also explores how media and society turned their gaze against the victims, fueling a new form of violence: victim blaming. And this portrayal immediately proved accurate when we analyzed comments under news articles, finding a clear pattern: many begin by condemning the abuser and then, after a “BUT,” shift the blame onto the victims.

We selected the most representative comments and flipped them, crossing out the “BUT” to give a strong message: if a woman is assaulted, there should be no “BUT”.

BUT there’s still a lot of work to do

The campaign took a firm stand against victim blaming, but the reactions to the campaign itself show just how much work there’s still to do.
